Charles Arnoldi
In a departure from his work with wood, Charles Arnoldi began painting on canvas in the late 1980s. The paintings were produced during a very emotional time in Arnoldi’s life and thus have a private quality about them.
Arnoldi discusses his own thoughts on the paintings, “I have always considered curved lines less serious than angular lines and geometric shapes. When I started approaching making marks I realized that when you’re standing in front of something making movements, your arm and wrist act like a pivot, and you start to make curves. It dawned on me that when you look at the history of art, the reason that so much looks the way it does is because it’s a hand and arm gesture that gets repeated over and over. And we can’t help ourselves as artists and painters from having this kind of a shape come up in painting. So I decided to go with it and let the lines go with nature.”
