Arnoldi’s Grid series was another departure for the artist. For the first time, he was dealing with the dynamics of pure color abstraction. Similar to his Ellipses, Arnoldi used an awareness of the materials’ physical qualities with which he was working.

As Arnoldi describes, “If you look where it is divided — paint wise — each section of color comes off the edge of the adjacent panel, so the geometric image is derived from the structure. And any panel that couldn’t be divided was a solid color…So that’s what these Grid paintings are all based on, using the structure to determine the image.”

What is obvious is that Arnoldi loves to experiment — placing color next to color, varying the size and placement of the panels, mixing up the combinations. And no two are exactly alike.
